Albany Waterway, Inc. has advanced a vision to introduce water features into downtown Albany.
Implementing this vision will bring jobs, affordable housing, retail and restaurants into the heart of the capital city. It will also promote significant tourism and safe gathering places for residents!
It meets the Governor’s challenge to identify high impact projects and bold statements that would make visitors to Albany take notice.
Studies have shown that urban waterways produce significant returns on investments, fueling local economies. This is evident in Buffalo’s Canalside, which hosts nearly 1,500 visitors annually, as well as San Antonio’s Riverwalk; Louisville, Kentucky’s Waterfront Park; Grenville South Carolina’s Falls Park/Reedy River downtown; Tampa, Florida Riverwalk, Savannah Georgie Riverfront Revitalization; Portland, Oregon Tom McCall Riverfront Park; and the Chattanooga, Tennessee Downtown Riverfront Redevelopment.
Each of these share common characteristics: private-public partnerships; active year-round programming and events; deliberate pedestrian access and placemaking; measured economic tracking; and high local pride/positive tourism sentiment.
The Albany Waterway vision is feasible from an economic, engineering, architectural and archaeological point of view. It can be accomplished in stages.
She has pleaded that this once in a generation transformation not be squandered by obstructionism, urging that supporters not be discouraged by naysayers!
The time is now! If not now, then when?
